{"id":210,"date":"2020-02-02T20:28:53","date_gmt":"2020-02-02T20:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jemontague.com\/?p=210"},"modified":"2020-03-16T11:38:13","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T11:38:13","slug":"norman-snodgrass-spong-a-crochet-pattern-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jemontague.com\/?p=210","title":{"rendered":"Norman Snodgrass &#038; Spong: A crochet pattern in progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This pattern is for Norman Snodgrass and his companion, Spong, from Sue Bough&#8217;s &#8220;Norman Snodgrass Saves the Green Planet&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/normansnodgrass.com\/\">Please do check out her website.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<br \/><\/strong>Unless specified otherwise, all rounds are worked as a continuous spiral.\u00a0<br \/>3mm hook works well with any DK yarn &#8211; I&#8217;ve used 100% acrylic, but you can try other yarns for a softer or different feel.\u00a0<br \/>Pattern uses US crochet terms.\u00a0<br \/>For Spong, an &#8220;eyelash&#8221; type yarn is required.\u00a0<br \/>Two pairs of 6mm safety eyes are also required &#8211; one pair per character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yarn<\/strong>:\u00a0<br \/>MC 1 is light blue<br \/>MC2 is bright orange<br \/>Small amounts of black, yellow, white and the eyelash orange are required for detail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Norman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Eyes (Make 2)<\/u><br \/>Sc 6 into MR. Join with SS.<br \/>Alternate: Chain 3, join with SS. Sc6 into centre of ring, join with SS.<\/p>\n<p><u>Head<br \/><\/u>1. Sc8 in MR (8)<br \/>2. Sc8 in front loop only. Slst to next st, cut yarn and pull through.<br \/>3. Join yarn in back loop of round 2, sc 7 in BLO (8)<\/p>\n<p><br \/>Stuff nose as you go &#8211; if you don&#8217;t do it each round, the opening becomes very narrow and difficult to stuff<\/p>\n<p>4. Sc2tog, s6 (7)<br \/>5. Sc3, sc2tog, sc2 (6)<br \/>6-8. Sc 6 around<br \/>12. Sc2 into each stitch (inc) around (12)<br \/>13. (Sc, inc) around (18)<br \/>14. (Sc, inc, sc) around (24)<br \/>15-18. Sc24 around\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep stuffing as you go. Sew eyes over rounds 12-14 and insert safety eyes through the centre of the white eye. Embroider mouth under nose between rows 13-14.<\/p>\n<p>19. (Sc, sc2tog, sc) around (18)<br \/>20. (Sc2tog, sc) around (12)<br \/>21. Sc2tog 6 times. Join with a slst. (6)<br \/>Finish stuffing, then sew the end through the six stitches, pulling tight to close the hole.<\/p>\n<p><u>Ears (make 2)<br \/><\/u>(Note: ears are not made in the round)<br \/>1. Ch5, sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc3. Turn, Ch1. (4)<br \/>2-4. Sc4, turn, ch1 (4)<br \/>5. Sc1, sc2tog, sc1, turn, ch1 (3)<br \/>6. Sc3, turn, ch1(3)<br \/>7. Sc1, sc2tog, turn, ch1 (2)<br \/>8. Sc2, turn, ch1 (2)<br \/>9. Sc2tog, finish off. (1)<\/p>\n<p>Sew ears on head, above eyes, in a triangular shape to give the ears depth.<\/p>\n<p><u>Body<br \/><\/u>1. Sc4 into a magic loop (4)<br \/>2. (Inc) into each stitch around (8)<br \/>3. (Sc1, inc) around (12)<br \/>4. Sc1, inc, (sc2, inc)x3, sc1 (16)<br \/>5. (Sc3, inc) around (20)<br \/>6. Sc2, inc, (sc4, inc)x3, sc2 (24)<br \/>7. (Sc5, inc) around (28)<br \/>8. Sc3, inc, (sc6, inc)x3, sc3 (32)<br \/>9. (Sc7, inc) around (36)<br \/>10-18. Sc36 around.<\/p>\n<p>Stuff the body as you go.<\/p>\n<p>19. Sc2, sc2tog, (sc4, sc2tog)x5, sc2 (30)<br \/>20. (Sc2tog, sc3) around (24)<br \/>21. Sc1, sc2tog, (sc2, sc2tog)x5, sc1 (18)<br \/>22. (Sc2tog, sc1) around (12)<br \/>23. Sc2tog 6 times. Join with a slst. (6)<br \/>Break the yarn and close the remaining 6 stitches.<\/p>\n<p>Sew head on body at the narrower end. It helps to push the \u201cpeak\u201d of the egg shape down into the body to create a space for the head to rest in.<\/p>\n<p><u>Feet (make 2)<br \/><\/u>1. Sc 4 in MR (4)<br \/>2. 2sc in each st around (8)<br \/>3-4. Sc8 (8)<\/p>\n<p>Ch 1, press sides of foot together &amp; Sc top closed. Cut yarn and leave a long end for sewing.<\/p>\n<p>On round 2, attach yarn.<\/p>\n<p>Toe 1: Chain 3, Slst in 2<sup>nd<\/sup> st from hook then SlSt into next st.<br \/>Toe 2: Sl St onto next st on foot. Ch6, sl st into second ch from hook and next 4 sts.<br \/>Toe 3: Slst onto next st on foot. Ch3, Sl st into second ch from hook and next 2 sts<\/p>\n<p>Sl St in next st in foot. Cut yarn and sew ends into foot.<\/p>\n<p>Sew feet between row 14-15<\/p>\n<p><u>Hands (make 2)<br \/><\/u>1. Sc 4 in MR (4)<br \/>2. 2sc in each st around (8)<br \/>3-4. Sc8 (8)<\/p>\n<p>Ch 1, press sides of foot together &amp; Sc top closed. Sc4 in MR (4)<br \/>2. Sc4 (4)<br \/>3. Sc, inc, sc2 (5)<br \/>4. Sc5 (5)<br \/>5. 2sc, inc, 2sc (6)<br \/>6-7. sc around (6)<br \/>8. Sc2 into each stitch (inc) around (12)<\/p>\n<p><u>Add orange eyelash yarn<\/u> \u2013 continue pattern with two yarns held together, or with eyelash yarn on its&#8217; own<br \/>6.
